Top 5: Favourite Witches From Books

Must be the season of the witch! Another Top 5. I was inspired by @bionic_book_worm to start these Top 5s. And I am feeling the Halloween/Autumnal vibes! So below are my favourite witches from books.

1. Franny & Jet from The Rules Of Magic by Alice Hoffman

I adore Franny and Jet and having watched Practical Magic, multiple times, I really enjoyed reading about the earlier life of them and their brother(!) Vincent. I am yet to read Practical Magic as I heard the film and books share few similarities.

2. Diana Bishop, Sarah Bishop & Em Mather of The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

A Discovery Of Witches has recently become a TV series via Sky, with Deborah Harkness involved (and starring in some excellent cameos) this series differs enough from the story so I can watch without feeling like it’s ruining the books. Sarah and Em are Diana’s aunts and their relationship is beautiful. I really enjoyed the books and I am looking forward to seeing where the series goes. Also Marcus (a vampire) is utterly adorable in both series and books!

3. Maguerite, Aurora and Hazel Swan from The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

These 3 sisters are not technically the main characters of The Wicked Deep, but they stuck in my mind. At first, the story felt very Hocus Pocus like however it was not longevity that these sisters craved but love. I loved the splicing of the past and present in the different chapters and my heart will always ache for Hazel.

4. Circe from Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe is an excellent, incredibly well written book about a Grecian witch called Circe. I read it earlier this year and wrote a review, what I loved the most was her, Circe, strong, independent and honest. She hones her craft through adversity and pain. She is born godspawn but becomes so much more. It’s a wonderful story.

5. Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy

OMGosh, Mildred Hubble was my spirit animal when I was at school, being the weird, strange, mess of a kid Mildred Hubble made me feel normal! I watched the series and read the books (whilst hiding out in the library at school) and yes, it is a middle grade book series but it is awesome and cute and a great way to introduce younger readers to a supernatural, magical world.

And there is a Bonus Number 6 this week. EVERY SINGLE WITCH from The Harry Potter Series by J K Rowling

Ok, so this is a bonus, because I cannot pick 1 or 2 or even 3 witches from the Harry Potter series. Of course, Hermione is on the list but I also adore Bellatrix, as sick and twisted as she was we leant something from her. Luna, making even the strangest of people seem normal and always having a nice word for those in need even if it is cryptic as hell. Professor McGonagell, strict, smart, loyal and secretly loving. Every single witch, in the Harry Potter series is my favourite. Except Umbridge. Umbridge has no fans.

Thank you very much for checking out my Top 5. If you have any ideas for future Top 5s, give me a shout I would love to try them out.

Happy reading Bookworms B)

    1. Be ready with tissues for Rules Of Magic because it is utterly heartbreaking! I believe A Discovery Of Witches should be in the states January 17th on both Sundance Now and Shudder! I’ve been hoarding my episodes to binge! 🤭😁
